Youth are important and valued at CLC. We have a growing group in our youth program, Kids for Christ (KFC), which meets every other Sunday evening during the school year for youth in grades 6-8 and 9-12, as well as an elementary group for youth in grades 1-5 which meets every other month.
Our interim Children and Youth Minister, Lisa Cornwell, provides active and engaging programs focusing on Bible study, games, service, outreach, and food! Youth take annual summer trips to the National ELCA Youth Gathering or regional gathering, camping trips, attend all-nighters, and other fun events. To raise funds for these trips and events, students hold fundraisers such as car washes, a silent auction, Butter Braid sales, a rummage sale, annual Bunco events and more. Kids are encouraged to attend summer camp at Camp Lutherwood in Bellingham.
Each year the KFC Youth participate in many service projects including trick-or-treating for The Other Bank and spearheading the Souper Bowl which gathers food for the Ferndale Food Bank.

Youth in grades 7-8 meet with Pastor Jana and Penny Magelssen during the Sunday School hour for confirmation class. We use the Sparkhouse Co-lab-orate curriculum to bring the Bible to life in our own lives, to learn more about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, and to learn about Lutheran beliefs and the catechism. The third year of confirmation (grade 9) is a service year in which students choose a service project both within the church and outside the church, working with a mentor from the congregation to guide them in the promises they will make when they are confirmed on Pentecost Sunday. Confirmation students attend a “Faith Urban Plunge” to visit non-Christian religious services and communities (i.e., Muslim, Jewish, Sikh, Hindu) in either Vancouver, B.C. or Seattle, and have a weekend retreat at Camp Lutherwood.
CLC also holds an annual Vacation Bible School. This popular and fun week of learning for preschool through grade school youth explores different Bible messages using storytelling, stations, fun music, and more.
All staff and volunteer adults who work with children at CLC have been background checked and adhere to our Safe Haven Policy.
The mission of our youth and confirmation program is to build disciples of strong faith to go out together in the world and do God’s work.
There’s something exciting on the horizon for preschool through fifth grade Sunday School beginning with the 2019-20 school year! We’ll have a Godly Play classroom that will help children explore their faith through story, gain religious language, and enhance their spirituality through creative and imaginative, wonder and play.
